Research Team

The project’s consortium research team has an interdisciplinary character, comprising specialists with the proved expertise, experience, knowledge and skills from all scientific research fields involved by the current project. The team includes 15 nominalized key-persons and 2 vacant positions:

1. Dr. Gabriel Marius Popescu (Coordinating Institution – CO – Project Leader), PI of the project, holds two PhD degree in archaeology (Romanian Academy, ‘Vasile Parvan’ Institute of Archaeology – 2009), and anthropological data modelling (Arizona State University, USA – 2015).
G. Popescu participated in several international or national projects (e.g. 2009-2010, Mediterranean Landscapes Project, Arizona State Univ., USA; 2017-2020, PN-III-P4-ID-PCE-2016-0262, Romania; 2018-2020, project PN-III-P1-1.2-PCCDI-2017-0686, Romania), where he successfully accomplished his tasks and duties, and demonstrated his ability to work in vast teams and on cutting edge research topics. He coordinates the activities proposed in the current project, and will handle the modelling of radiocarbon data in correlation with stable isotopes values under the R statistical and programming environment. He is also involved in designing of the calibration software and integration with the existing R packages, as well as in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.), along with the administrative tasks concerning the good implementation of the project.

2. Dr. Cristian Panaiotu (CO – Research Member) is Professor at University of Bucharest and Head of Paleomagnetic Laboratory. Dr. Panaiotu directed many national research projects. In the current project, he is involved with the archaeomagnetic dating necessary to check the accuracy of radiocarbon data. He is, as well, equally involved in the design of the calibration curve, as well as in the dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.).

3. Dr. Alfred Vespremeanu-Stroe (CO – Research Member) is Professor at University of Bucharest.
He had led as PI or Coordinator of a Partner team, four national and international research projects (2016-2017, EraNETRus_ST2014-123; 2015-2016, PN-II-CT-RO-FR-2014-2-0062; 2012-2014, PN-II-RU-TE-2011-3- 0293; 2009-2011, PN2 PCE 1038/2008). In the current project, his activity is connected to the geological section of the project, related to core works and geomorphological samples necessary to perform the calibration curve of the FRE. He is also involved in the design of the calibration curve, as well as in the dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.).

4. Dr. Catalin Lazar (CO – Research Member) is Head of the ArchaeoScience#RO Platform of the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest, and he had led as PI or Coordinator of a Partner, four national research projects (2013-2017, PN-II-PT-PCCA-2013-4-2302; 2016-2018, PN-III-P2-2.1-PED-2016-0742; 2018-2020, PN-III-P1-1.2-PCCDI-2017-0686; 2018-2020, 15PFE/2018). In the current project, he is responsible with archaeological samples and integration of stratigraphic data with pottery style in order to obtain a correlation between absolute chronology and relative chronology. He is also involved in the design of the calibration curve, and in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.).

5. Dr. Marcela Popa (CO – Postdoc Member) is the main responsible of the Stable Isotopes Laboratory. As a Postdoc she has experience in microbiology, and recently specialized in stable isotopes. She was a member of over 30 national and international research projects. In the current project, she is coordinating the stable isotopic analysis. She will also be involved in the design of the FRE calibration and in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.).

6. Cristina Covataru (CO – PhD Student) has experience in the GIS and data integration, and she is a member in two national research projects. In the current project, she works with the geospatial integration of radiocarbon data from the field works (archaeological sites and cores) in order to map the spatial variability and distribution of FRE. She is also involved in the design of the FRE calibration and in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.), and documentary background.

7. Ovidiu Frujina (CO – Technician Member) is an MA with experience in the databases, data collecting and sorting. In the current project he will be involved with feeding the database with the necessary information, as well as participating in field works and data processing, sorting the information, and in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, etc.), and documentary background.

8. Georgiana Alexandra Grigore (CO – Technician Member) She has experience in the field of stable isotopes, and in the current project, her tasks are connected with this domain, dealing with sample preparation and measurement on IRMS. 9. Dr. Tiberiu Bogdan Sava (P1 – Person in charge from Partner 1) is the Head of RoAMS Laboratory from IFINHH, and the Coordinator of P1 team.
Dr. Sava holds a PhD in Physics and has a solid expertise in the fields of mass spectrometry and ion beam applications, along with outstanding experience in particle accelerators in either the design of electro-magnetic components and also in their installation and commissioning processes. He was involved in many national and international projects (as PI, Partner Coordinator or team member). In the current project, he coordinates the P1 team and is responsible with AMS radiocarbon and OSL dating, data processing and results interpretation. He will be involved in the design of the calibration software and in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, seminars, summer school, talks, etc.), along with the P1 administrative tasks concerning the good implementation of the project.

10. Dr. Gabriela Sava (P1 – Postdoc Member) is Postdoc with excellent expertise in collagen extraction, and sample preparation for AMS radiocarbon dating. She holds a PhD in biochemistry and was involved in several national and international projects (as a team member). In the current project, she coordinates the sample preparation process in the RoAMS lab, and she will also be involved in dissemination activities (e.g. articles, presentations, etc.).
